
Most Valuable Bearkats Recognized Sunday

The “Most Valuable” student-athletes for each of Sam Houston's 17 sports teams were announced Sunday night at the third annual Night of Champions celebration at the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center.
Fall sports MVP winners included
• Karl Schreiber (Men's Cross Country) - Top finisher in five of cross country team's six meets last fall)
• Ana Moreno (Women's Cross Country) - Three-time All-Southland Conference performer
• Deveney Wells-Gibson (Volleyball) – The first volleyball player to earn First Team All-Southland honors 4 years in a row
• Michael Wade (Football) - Two-time All-Southland safety who finished his career as Sam Houston's 8th all-time top tackler
• Ashley Alonzo (Soccer) - First team All-Conference performer who helped lead soccer team to its best Southland finish in history
• Michael Field (Athletic Trainer) - Student trainer for soccer in the fall and baseball in the spring)
Winter sports MVP winners included
• Demarcus Gatlin (Men's Basketball) - Team's top scorer who led men's basketball to its winningest NCAA Division I season victory total
• Shernise Robertson (Women's Basketball) – The league's leading scorer and an All-Southland Conference performer
• Tyler Adams (Men's Indoor Track and Field) - Southland Conference Indoor Track Freshman of the Year
• Paula Smith (Women's Outdoor Track and Field) - All-Southland Conference in both the 60-meter dash and long jump
• Janine Kuwahara (Bowling) – All-America selection and team leader in total pins for Sam Houston team that reached the NCAA Final Four
• Phil Chavez (Baseball Manager) - In his third year as manager for the baseball team
Spring sports MVP winners for the 2015 season were
• Zach Cabra (Men's Golf) - Two-time All-Southland golfer who owns the lowest stroke average in school history
• Paige Nelson (Women's Golf) – First team All-Southland selection after a fourth place finish at conference championships
• Karen Martinez (Tennis) - Solid performer at No. 1 doubles and No. 5 singles this spring)
Spring sports MVP winners from 2014 (since the current squad's seasons are still underway
• Anthony Azar (2014 Baseball) - Southland Conference “Player of the Year”
• Cecilia Castillo (2014 Softball) - Two-time All-Southland Conference honoree
• Rodney Jones (2014 Men's Outdoor Track & Field) - All-Southland in the 400 meter dash and the 4 by 100 relay
• Lygia Foreman (2014 Women's Outdoor Track & Field) - Southland Conference women's track Student-Athlete of the Year
