Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine has tabbed Sam Houston as the favorite in the 2015 Southland Conference race.
The Bearkats and Southeastern Louisiana, who ended as co-champions last year with identical 7-1 league marks, have been picked to finish first and second this fall by the annual publication.
Central Arkansas, Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian are predicted to finish in the three, four and five positions in the league race. McNeese State is picked sixth followed by Lamar, Northwestern State, Nicholls, Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist.
Texas Football points to the fact that Sam Houston lost only two senior starters from last year's 11-5 Bearkat squad that reached the NCAA FCS semifinals and highlights the stats of junior quarterback Jared Johnson who threw for 3,054 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 999 yards and six scores.
“Once the season starts, there will be at least one constant,” Texas Football reports. “Sam Houston has been the kingpin of the league over the past four years with a 24-5 conference record, three conference titles and four playoff trips including two berths in the NCAA National Championship game.”
Head coach K. C. Keeler's Kats open the 2015 season on Sept. 5 with a trip to Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Home games at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium include conference contests with Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist, Nicholls and Northwestern State and a non-conference date with Texas A&M-Commerce.
Season tickets for the games at Bowers Stadium plus the 90th “Battle of the Piney Woods” presented by H-E-B at NRG Stadium in Houston are on sale now online at www.gobearkats.com . Tickets in the Sam Houston section for the season opener at Texas Tech also are on sale.
