Jasmine McCants Signs With Sam Houston

Jasmine McCants, a 6-0 post player from Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville, Alabama, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Sam Houston and play women's basketball for Bearkat head coach Brenda Nichols.
McCants earned NJCAA All-America honorable mention honors and was an All-Region and All-Conference selection at Alabama Southern. Her sophomore season in 2014-15, she averaged 13.4 points and 11.0 rebounds, starting all 29 of her team's games.
She ranked second in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) in offensive rebounds and third in total rebounds in the league last year.
“Jasmine is an outstanding young woman who will bring needed rebounding strength in the paint for us,” Nichols said. “She knows the game and works hard. She is unbelievable on the boards and she can be a big presence for us inside.”
McCants earned NJCAA All-Region 22 honors both years at Alabama Southern. She averaged 12.8 points and 10.2 rebounds as a freshman. This past season, as a sophomore, she shot 42.6 per cent from the floor and blocked 25 shots.
As a senior at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida, McCants led the Eagles to a 17-7 to earn all-region honors in 2012-13.
The newest Bearkat women's basketball signee brings Nichols' current recruiting class to six. Five high school seniors join the Sam Houston program next year. They include 5-10 Lydia Baxter from Austin Bowie; 6-1 Ashleigh Cooper from Plfugerville Henderson; 5-8 Laurynn McGowen from Seguin High; 5-5 Kamry Orr from Little Rock Central and 5-5 Berniezha Tidwell from Hot Springs, Ark., High School.
"We are so excited to have all of these players join the Sam Houston program next year,” Nicholls said. “They are a talented group of student-athletes not only on the court but in the classroom. They come from top programs and know what it takes to be successful.”
