Getting to know SHSU senior Ashley Alonzo

Each week leading up to the 2015 Sam Houston State soccer season, we'll spotlight one of 10 seniors. As a unit, the class has helped vault the Kats into a consistent competitor in the Southland Conference. Last season, the Kats posted their highest win total in league play at 8-2 and took second. With nine starters and 15 letterwinners returning in 2015, SHSU seeks its first conference title in program history.
Today's interview features senior Ashley Alonzo. A season ago, the Little Elm native finished second on the team with seven goals in 16 games including a hat trick against Incarnate Word. Alonzo accounted for three game-winning goals and two assists.
Question: Who is your favorite soccer player?
Alonzo: Messi, he's such a technically sound player.
Question: What is your favorite soccer memory?
Alonzo: When I scored a hat trick against Incarnate Word my junior year.
Question: What has been your favorite part of this year's women's World Cup?
Alonzo: All the amazing goals that have been scored throughout the group stage.
Question: Any favorite television show?
Alonzo: Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.
Question: If you could visit anywhere, where would it be?
Alonzo: Spain!
Question: What is your favorite thing about Sam Houston State?
Alonzo: The athletic staff! They're always behind you 100% and they make sure you're the best student athlete you can possibly be.
Question: If you didn't play soccer, what sport would you be playing?
Alonzo: Probably volleyball
Question: Any pre-game superstitions?
Alonzo: Before every game I have to listen to 'Party Up In Here.' It just gets me going!
Question: What music pumps you up to play?
Alonzo: Hip hop
Question: What are your personal goals heading into the season?
Alonzo: I scored seven goals in conference play last season and for my senior season I want to top that.
Question: What are your hobbies?
Alonzo: In my free time, I ride horses and I love to fish.
Question: What is your favorite food?
Alonzo: Seafood is the way to go!
Question: What social media site do you use the most?
Alonzo: Probably Instagram ... I love to see what everyone is up to through pictures.
Question: What is your favorite holiday?
Alonzo: Definitely Thanksgiving; being in college keeps me away from my family for long periods of time so Thanksgiving is the one guaranteed holiday that I get to see everyone.
Question: In three words, how would you describe yourself?
Alonzo: Athletic, sarcastic, and competitive
Question: What piece of advice would you give to younger players?
Alonzo: Play to the best of your ability every game, you never know who will be watching. Everyone loves a hard worker.
