Bearkats post fifth 3.0+ semester GPA in a row
7/1/2015 4:00:00 PM | Athletics
As a tennis player for Sam Houston, Maddie Mortimore has rolled up 37 career singles victories and 21 doubles wins for the Bearkats since her freshman season in 2012-13.
The right-hander from Farnham, Surrey in the United Kingdom, has produced a stellar record in the classroom as well with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in three years as an economics major. Mortimore joins Kara Whitson (track & field), Josh Reynolds (football) and Janine Kuwahara (bowling) as Bearkats who have maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA for scholastic careers of three years or longer.
Performances like these are why the more than 425 student-athletes on Sam Houston's 17 intercollegiate sports teams posted the fifth consecutive department semester above 3.0 grade point average during the 2015 spring semester.
This springs' department of average of 3.06 joins consecutive semesters of 3.01, 3.04, 3.01 and last fall's record GPA of 3.16. The overall combined career GPA for Sam Houston student-athletes is 3.11.
While continuing a tradition of academic success, the Bearkats' performances on the field of play included two Southland Conference championships, a fourth Southland Conference Men's All-Sports title and league runner-up finishes in six sports.
The football, men's golf, men's basketball and bowling teams all participated in Division I post-season play with both football and bowling reaching the NCAA Final Four.
Again this spring, seven Sam Houston sports teams produced overall GPAs above 3.0. The nationally-ranked women's bowling led all teams with a 3.62 GPA followed by tennis (3.57), volleyball (3.50), women's golf (3.41), men's golf (3.25), soccer (3.24) and women's track & field (3.12).
These performances highlight the SHSU Department of Athletics spring 2015 Academic Report released this week by associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson and assistant athletic director for student services Jessica Payne.
"Seven of our sports teams produced team grade point averages higher than 3.0 both during the fall and spring semesters this year and the department has produced an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in six of the last seven semesters," Sam Houston director of athletics Bobby Williams said. "Our top goal is to define the term 'student-athlete'. We are extremely proud of our student-athlete's achievements in the classroom and commend our coaching staff for the job they do in recruiting quality student-athletes."
Thirty-nine Sam Houston student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 spring semester GPA.
Other academic highlights for SHSU athletics this semester included regional and league recognition of the success of Bearkat players.
Three times during the 2014-15 calendar, Sam Houston produced Southland “Student-Athlete of the Year” winners. Zach Cabra earned the honor for men's golf and Kara Whitson recognized as both indoor and outdoor women's track and field “Student-Athlete of the Year.”
Since 2007, 19 Bearkats have earned recognition as their individual sport's Southland “Student-Athlete of the Year” a total of 23 times.
Twenty-four Sam Houston student-athletes were selected to the Academic All-Southland Conference honor squads for their sports, an award which honors players for both academic excellence and outstanding performances on the field of player.
Academic All-Southland performers by teams were Alex Bisacca in baseball; DeMarcus Gatlin in men's basketball; Lachlan Edwards, Keshawn Hill and Luc Swimberghe in football; Cabra and J. T. Taylor in men's golf; Madison Bible, Kylie Hambleton, Allie Johnson and Shelby McDanield in soccer; Sarah Allison in softball; Evan Arambula, Patrick Pitts and Karl Schreiber in women's track and field; Whitson, Ruth Amaku, Nicole Aponte, Nicole Jenrette, Elizabeth Lyssy and Kaylynne Wright in women's track and field and Michelle Griffith, Carling Urben and Deveney Wells-Gibson in volleyball.
A total of 180 Sam Houston student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2014-15 intercollegiate sports season.
The honor roll is released at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 grade point average (GPA) during the semester in which their sport's championship competition occurred. The 2015 spring honor roll was announced Wednesday afternoon
Among Bearkats' honorees were 38 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 spring semester GPAs.
