Gilberto Clavell, all-Southland Conference player for Sam Houston's 2010 and 2011 men's basketball teams, has been named to the 12-man roster for the Puerto Rico national team that will compete at the Pan American games in Toronto July 21 through July 25.
Head coach Rick Pitino set the final roster for his first tournament with the Puerto Rico national team this week.
Puerto Rico will meet Brazil in the team's opening game July 21. The squad then will face the USA on July 22 and Venezuela on July 23. The semifinals and finals of the tournament will take place on July 24 and July 25.
One of three Sam Houston men's basketball players who have earned NCAA Division I All-America honors, Clavell now plays for Maratonistas de Coamo in the Puerto Rico professional league. The 6-7, 275-pound former Bearkat previously played in the Israeli National League where he was third in scoring with 22.8 points per game.
Clavell is one of only two Bearkats to earn post season Southland Conference All-Tournament honors two years in a row. He was the starting center for Sam Houston's 2010 Southland Conference champions that played Baylor in the New Orleans NCAA Regional.
