Sixteen former Sam Houston State baseball players are currently playing in the professional ranks. Each week during the summer, we take a look back at how these Pro Kats fared. Below is a look at how each player is performing through August 16.
Alex Bisacca | Gulf Coast League Yankees (Rookie Ball) | New York Yankees
The Yankees' 35th-round selection allowed three hits and two earned runs while walking one in 1 2-3 innings of work on Friday. In seven games with the GCL Yankees, the righty has tossed 10 2-3 innings, allowing 15 hits and five earned runs while fanning nine and walking four for a 4.22 ERA.
Logan Boyd | Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short Season) | Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox' 2015 19th-round selection earned his third win in relief on Tuesday, allowing one earned run and four hits while striking out two and walking another in 4 2-3 innings. On Sunday, Boyd lowered his season ERA to 2.92 after allowing just one hit, striking out a pair and walking one in 2 1-3 innings.
Ryan Brinley | Hagerstown Suns (Class-A) | Washington Nationals
The Nationals' 2015 27th-round pick logged two appearances over the week, allowing two hits and one earned run in 2-3 of an inning on Wednesday before getting back on track Sunday, striking out one in two innings of hitless work. The righty has allowed just two earned runs in 13 2-3 innings of work (1.32 ERA) while fanning 10 and walking one.
Carter Burgess | Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A) | Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays' 2014 Round 28 selection made four starts at first last week, logging hits in three games and scoring one run in his return from the seven-day disabled list. Burgess is hitting .239 in 88 at-bats with the Hot Rods this season.
Cody Dickson | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The 2013 Round 4 Pirates' selection suffered his first loss since June 28, despite allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out one in a season-high eight innings pitched. Dickson is tied for second in the Florida State League in wins (10), seventh in innings pitched (120 2-3) and 19th in ERA (3.95).
Tyler Eppler | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The sixth-round 2014 Pirates' selection picked up the win in his Wednesday start, allowing four hits and no runs in 5 2-3 innings while striking out three. The victory pushed the righty to 4-1 on the season behind a 3.77 ERA in 45 1-3 innings.
Dallas Gallant | High Desert Mavericks (Class-A Advanced) | Texas Rangers
The Twins' 23rd-round selection in 2013 rebounded from a tough appearance on Tuesday (1 2-3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) while making his first professional start on Saturday. The righty went 3 1-3 innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while fanning four and walking two. The righty has made four appearances with High Desert since being traded over from the Twins' organization and owns a 3.00 ERA.
Andrew Godail | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short Season) | Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies' 2015 26th-round selection allowed a pair of runs over two appearances last week finishing with a combined line of 1 2-3 innings, two hits, two earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Despite being touched up, the lefty owns a 3.44 ERA in 15 games, holding opponents to a .235 average.
Dustin Martin | Toros de Tijuana (Triple-A Mexican League) | MLB affiliate
The 26th-round pick by the Twins in 2006 continued his tear with the Toros, going 9-for-18 at the plate with five runs scored in as many games. In 26 games with Tijuana, Martin is hitting at a whopping .375 clip, scoring 27 runs with 30 RBIs while logging 64 total bases.
Ryan O'Hearn | Wilmington Blue Rocks (Class-A Advanced) | Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals No. 14 prospect – according to MLB.com – was named the Carolina League hitter of the week, mashing two home runs and six RBIs in a 4-for-5 performance on Saturday. As an encore, O'Hearn belted his fifth long ball with Wilmington and 24th of the season on Sunday in a 2-for-4 performance including three RBIs.
Nolan Riggs | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Class-A Short Season) | San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants pick up from a season ago made his first start since July 21, allowing just three hits and as many walks while striking out two in a six-inning victory on Tuesday. In 43 1-3 innings over 11 games, including six starts, with Salem, the righty boasts a 2.28 ERA, holding opponents to a .220 average.
Matt Shelton | Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Class-A Advanced) | Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' 2011 24th-round pick was placed on the seven-day disabled list after allowing eight hits and six earned runs while walking three in 4 1-3 innings on Wednesday.
Caleb Smith | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) | New York Yankees
The 14th-round 2013 Yankees' selection secured an impressive week, tossing a combined 10 innings of scoreless baseball alongside four strikeouts and two walks. The left-hander is 8-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 112 1-3 innings on the season. Over his last 10 appearances, Smith is 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA in 54 1-3 innings.
Ryan Tepera | Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A) | Toronto Blue Jays
The reliever made three scoreless appearances, logging six innings and allowing just three hits while striking out seven without allowing a walk. The righty has split time with the Toronto Blue Jays and Buffalo Bisons during 2015, boasting a 1.20 ERA in 17 games with Buffalo and a 2.28 ERA in 21 games with Toronto.
Corey Toups | Lexington Legends (Class-A) | Kansas City Royals
The Royals' 15th-round selection recorded four hits over six games last week and scored two runs. Toups is hitting .288 in 99 games with the Legends, scoring a South Atlantic League-leading 73 runs while ranking eighth with 30 stolen bases.
Collin Yelich | Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie Ball) | Atlanta Braves
The Braves' 29th-round selection produced three hits, drove in three runs and scored two runs over six games last week. The backstop is hitting .244 in 32 game with the GLC Braves.
