Sixteen former Sam Houston State baseball players are currently playing in the professional ranks. Each week during the summer, we take a look back at how these Pro Kats fared. Below is a look at how each player is performing through August 23.
Alex Bisacca | Gulf Coast League Yankees (Rookie Ball) | New York Yankees
The Yankees' 35th-round selection posted a pair of scoreless outings last week, allowing just one hit while striking out four over three innings on Tuesday and permitting two hits while fanning three in 1 2-3 innings on Saturday. In 10 games of pro ball, Bisacca owns a 3-2 record and 3.79 ERA in 19 innings.
Logan Boyd | Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short Season) | Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox' 2015 19th-round selection earned his first professional start on Saturday, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six in as many innings. In 10 games, Boyd is 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA, holding opponents to a .278 average in 30 2-3 innings.
Ryan Brinley | Hagerstown Suns (Class-A) | Washington Nationals
The Nationals' 2015 27th-round pick tossed two shutouts last week, allowing two hits while striking out one in two innings on Wednesday and picking up his first professional save in 1 1-3 innings of no-hit ball on Sunday. In 23 1-3 innings, the righty owns a 1.16 ERA, limiting hitters to a .225 average.
Carter Burgess | Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A) | Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays' 2014 Round 28 selection went 0-for-2 with a strikeout on Thursday. Burgess is hitting .223 in 33 games this season including 20 starts at first base and 10 starts at third base.
Cody Dickson | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The 2013 Round 4 Pirates' selection was touched up in his start Wednesday, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out six in five innings. In 24 starts, spanning 125 2-3 innings, the lefty is 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA.
Tyler Eppler | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The sixth-round 2014 Pirates' selection earned his fourth straight win after a pair of scoreless seven-inning performances last week. In each outing, the righty struck out five and walked one. Eppler allowed two hits on Monday and four on Saturday. Over his last 10 games, he is 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA including 35 strikeouts over 47 2-3 innings.
Dallas Gallant | High Desert Mavericks (Class-A Advanced) | Texas Rangers
The Twins' 23rd-round selection in 2013 allowed two hits, three earned runs and five walks while fanning two in 4 2-3 innings during his second professional start on Friday. In five games with High Desert, the righty owns a 3.95 ERA while notching a 9-4 record and 3.00 ERA in 95 games this season.
Andrew Godail | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short Season) | Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies' 2015 26th-round selection struck out two in one inning on Saturday. Over his last seven appearances, spanning 8 2-3 innings, the lefty has allowed just two earned runs while striking out nine and walking three. In 16 games this season, Godail is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA.
Dustin Martin | Toros de Tijuana (Triple-A Mexican League) | MLB affiliate
The 26th-round pick by the Twins in 2006 went 3-for-18 over five games last week, scoring three runs and driving in a pair. Martin is hitting at a whopping .375 clip, scoring 27 runs with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 96 at-bats over 26 games with Tijuana.
Ryan O'Hearn | Wilmington Blue Rocks (Class-A Advanced) | Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals' 2014 eighth-round selection showed why he ranks as the organization's No. 14 prospect, belting his fourth home run in five games on Wednesday. O'Hearn went 4-for-18 in six games last week and scored two runs. Over his last 10 games, O'Hearn is hitting .353 (12-for-34) with 10 RBIs.
Nolan Riggs | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Class-A Short Season) | San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants pick up from a season ago allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out four and walking one in four innings on Monday. Despite the trouble, the righty is 2-2 with a 3.53 ERA in his last 10 games, striking out 31 and walking 14 in 38 1-3 innings.
Matt Shelton | Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Class-A Advanced) | Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' 2011 24th-round pick returned from the seven-day disabled list in style, allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out six in seven innings to earn the win in his start on Thursday.
Caleb Smith | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) | New York Yankees
The 14th-round 2013 Yankees' selection continued to roll, striking out a career-high 11 hitters in six innings while allowing just four hits and one walk to pick up the win on Friday. The lefty is 9-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 23 games, including 22 starts, over 118 1-3 innings.
Ryan Tepera | Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A) | Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays' 2009 19th-round selection pushed his consecutive scoreless-inning streak to eight with a pair of hitless innings last week. Over 19 games, including 23 2-3 innings, with the Bisons, Tepera is 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA.
Corey Toups | Lexington Legends (Class-A) | Kansas City Royals
The Royals' 15th-round selection went 4-for-10 with a pair of runs including his first home run since July 22 and stole a base before being placed on the seven-day disabled list. Toups leads the South Atlantic League with 75 runs, is tied for ninth with 27 doubles and is ninth with 31 stolen bases.
Collin Yelich | Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie Ball) | Atlanta Braves
The Braves' 29th-round selection played in nine games over seven days last week, going 5-for-27 at the plate, scoring two runs and walking five times. In 39 games with the GLC Braves, Yelich is hitting .234 with nine RBIs and 20 walks to just 13 strikeouts.
