
Hall of Honor Dinner Nov. 13 To Honor 8 Greats

Eight Bearkat sports greats will be inducted into the Sam Houston men's and women's Halls of Honor at a special dinner at the Lowman Student Center Friday, November 13. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a 6 p.m. social and 6:30 p.m. dinner.
Roshunda Betts (track and field), Wayne Daigle (softball), Jennie Sewell (track and field) and Shayla Teague (basketball) are this year's inductees for the Sam Houston Women's Letter Association Hall of Honor.
Billy Anderson (football), Donald Cole (basketball), Ron Randleman (football) and Trey Woods (football) are the inductees for the Sam Houston Lettermen's Association Hall of Honor.
The addition of the four 2015 inductees will bring the total Hall of Honor members to 39. The first five women were inducted in 2007.
Both Betts and Sewell are two of the five Sam Houston student-athletes who have earned NCAA All-America honors in Division I track and field.
Betts was a three-time indoor and two-time outdoor Southland Conference champion. She won honors as the Southland "Outstanding Field Events Performer" in both the league's 2006 indoor and outdoor meets. Betts set school records in both the javelin and the triple jump. She earned NCAA Outdoor All-America honors with a fifth place national finish in the javelin in 2006.
Sewell won seven Southland Conference pole vault championships (four indoor titles and three outdoors). Her fifth place finish at the 2007 NCAA outdoor meet earned her All-America honors. She voted Southland Conference "Outstanding Field Performer" at the 2007 indoor championships.
Daigle led Sam Houston's softball program as Bearkat head coach in the early 1980s. He directed the softball team to the NAIA national championship in 1981 and the NCAA Division II national title in 1982. His 1983 team was NCAA Division II runner-up. Daigle coached six NCAA All-Americans.
Teague stands as Sam Houston's third all-time leading scorer and ranks fourth in Bearkat women's basketball career marks in both rebounding and blocked shots. An All-Southland Conference selection in both 1996 and 1999, Teague posted career marks of 1,487 points, 851 rebounds and 111 blocked shots. She was the Southland's leading rebounder in 1999.
The quartet of men being inducted in November will bring the total number of Bearkats in the Lettermen's Hall of Honor to 186. The first inductions were in 1971.
Billy Anderson earned All-Southland Conference honors as a free safety for the football team in both 1987 and 1988 to stand among the first Bearkats to be so honored in Sam Houston's first two seasons in the NCAA Division I league. He stands of the program's all-time leader in punt returns with 94 for 857 yards. He earned All-America honors in 1987 after leading the Southland in interceptions.
Donald Cole is a two-time All-Southland Conference men's basketball performer who earned league "Player of the Year" honors after leading the Kats to both the 2003 regular season and tournament championship. Named as Southland Tournament "Most Valuable Player" in 2003, Cole totaled 984 points and 523 rebounds in his two-year career.
Ron Randleman stands as the winningest coach in both Southland Conference and Sam Houston football history. The athletic director who led the program's move up to the NCAA Division I level, Randleman totaled 131 victories from 1982 to 2004 and 100 wins as a Southland Conference head coach. He produced Gulf Star Conference championship teams in 1985 and 1986 and Southland winners in 1991, 2001 and 2004. His squads earned FCS playoff berths four times.
Trey Woods is a special teams legend at Sam Houston. Earning a spot on the squad as a walk-on in 1992, he set the single game, single season and career record for blocked kicks. His four-year totals include eight punt blocks, two field goals and two extra points. He blocked five kicks during the 1993 season.
