The latest installment of Meet the Bearkat volleyball team features Sarah Sherman.
A setter and right side hitter from Chapin High School in El Paso, Sarah saw action as a reserve for the Sam Houston squad that rolled up 18 victories last season. Sam Houston has earned eight consecutive Southland Conference tournament berths and finished among the top three teams in the league's final regular season standings each of the last five years.
Question: How old were you when you started volleyball? 12.
Sarah: I was in seventh grade when I started to play. I had no idea how to play volleyball then.
Question: What is your favorite volleyball memory?
Sarah: My favorite volleyball memory would be playing in Ohio at Junior Nationals and getting to beat a team that we had lost to in the semifinal round at a tournament a couple weeks before. But we also make a lot of good memories on the road trips we take for away games. We had some hilarious lip sync contests.
Question: Who is your favorite athlete?
Sarah: At the moment, it would be either Ronda Rousey or Jordy Nelson
Question: What are your favorite TV shows?
Sarah: Chopped or Cutthroat Kitchen
Question: What's the most fun part of volleyball practice?
Sarah: Playing 6 on 6 or game style drills.
Question: What's the least fun part of volleyball practice?
Sarah: Probably film, but it's also really helpful.
Question: If you could visit anywhere, where would it be?
Sarah: My top three destinations right now are Colorado, Maine, and Spain.
Question: What is your favorite thing about Sam Houston?
Sarah: It's become my home away from home. The people I've met here have helped me develop as a person, mentally, physically, and spiritually. They have become my second family and an integral part of my life. And I get to play the sport that I love while going to school at the same time.
Question: If you didn't play volleyball, what sport would you be playing?
Sarah: Basketball or golf. Quite frankly I would try to play any sport I could if I couldn't play volleyball.
Question: Any pre-match superstitions?
Sarah: Not really, I'm not a very superstitious person.
Question: What music pumps you up to play?
Sarah: I listen to anything before a game. I don't have a specific song that will pump me up. I would just prefer not to listen to really hard rock “screamo” songs.
Question: What are your personal goals heading into the season?
Sarah: My goals are to be consistent and constantly improve my skills this season in order to help the team get a ring on our fingers this season.
Question: What are your hobbies?
Sarah:I love hiking and camping, mountain biking, anything involving being outside, and I like to read as well.
Question: What is your favorite food?
Sarah: Either ice cream or Mexican food
Question: What social media site do you use the most?
Sarah:Instagram
Question: What is your favorite holiday?
Sarah: Thanksgiving. I get to be around family and friends and a ton of great food.
Question: In three words, how would you describe yourself?
Sarah: Competitive, hard-working, honest
Question: What piece of advice would you give to younger players?
Sarah: Progress is made outside of your comfort zone. Be willing to do something you've never done before in order to get what you want. Always give all of your effort in order to accomplish your goals. If your goals don't scare you, they aren't big enough.
Sarah Sherman and the rest of the Bearkats begin the 2015 volleyball season on Friday and Saturday August 28-29 with four matches in the annual Sam Houston Invitational Tournament at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Tickets are available online at www.gobearkats.com . Sam Houston students and faculty-staff are admitted free with presentation of their BearkatOne card.
