
Volleyball Falls In Three To Charleston

Despite 17 kills by Brooke White, Sam Houston fell to College of Charleston in three sets in the Bearkats volleyball team's opening match at the Courtyard By Marriott North Charleston Invitational tournament Friday evening.
White boasted a .300 hitting percentage with only six errors in 33 attempts. The 17 kills fell two short of her season best.
College of Charleston trailed only once on the way to a 25-17 25-17 25-22 victory. The Bearkats fell behind early in each of the first two sets. The tournament hosts jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set. Sam Houston cut the margin to five point late, 22-17. College of Charleston led 9-1 early in the second. Sam Houston cut the lead to 11-10 but could come no closer.
The Bearkats came on strong in the third stanza with five ties and one early lead. Tied 6-6, College of Charleston went on a 5-0 run to earn the straight set victory.
Sam Houston, playing without leading scorer Jordyn Vaughn who is out with a bad ankle, drops to 5-7. College of Charleston stands 7-5 for the year and has won six of its last seven matches.
Taylor Cunningham and Shelby Genung added seven and six kills, respectively. Meredith Griffith assisted on 29 of Sam Houston's 33 kills and had 10 digs. Claire Kilpatrick and Breanna Homer each added nine digs.
Sam Houston will finish their non-conference play for 2015 Saturday with matches against Minnesota at 9:30 a.m. and Bryant at 3:30 p.m.
