Sam Houston falls 1-0 to Houston Baptist

Houston Baptist's Ellee Hall notched her first goal of the season on a rebounded shot from teammate Autumn Wildung for the matches only goal as the Huskies downed Sam Houston soccer 1-0 on Friday evening from Pritchett Field.

The loss was the Kats (4-4-1, 1-1 Southland) first at their home confines since falling to Abilene Christian, 3-2 on Sept. 19 last season. That streak of non-losses spanned seven consecutive matches.

“I thought the first half, after about 10 or 15 minutes, there wasn't enough intensity with the way we played,” eighth-year head coach Tom Brown said. “We struggled to get players closed down and they were able to play to us pretty easy. In the second half, we came out with better intensity and created some opportunities but we've got to be more focused in getting that taken care of.”

Meanwhile, Houston Baptist (4-2-1, 2-0 SLC) posted their second straight win against the Kats, with the prior in penalties that sent Sam Houston home at last year's league tournament. The Huskies outshot the Bearkats 9-6 including edging Sam Houston 5-4 in shots on goal.

In the net, Sam Houston senior Kylie Hambleton logged four saves. Senior Mariah Titus took two shots, both on goal. Allie Johnson, Whitney Woodward, Ashley Alonzo and Maddy Panozzo each posted one shot. Panozzo's shot, with less than 10 minutes remaining, sailed high.

Sam Houston, who had opportunities with three of four corner kicks coming in the second half, returns to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m., against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“After tonight, they've got to get their minds off this,” Brown said. “Nothing comes good from thinking about this on Sunday. They have to be prepared to get out and not make those same mistakes they made tonight. Hopefully we'll have a good competitive attitude for 90 minutes rather than being selective.”
