Box Score 2 Brooke White, Taylor Cunningham and Shelby Genung led the offense as Sam Houston finished played the Baylor Volleyball Invitational in Waco with a three-set victory over Coppin State.
White, who came into the tournament leading the Southland Conference in total kills, led the Kats with 10 kills against CSU. Cunningham and Genung each totaled eight as Sam Houston totaled 40 kills in the victory.
The win ups Sam Houston's record to 4-3 for the year. The Bearkats lost in five sets to host Baylor Friday night and fell to undefeated Cal-Poly in their first match of the day Saturday afternoon.
Michelle Griffith assisted on 22 kills in the Coppin State victory. Claire Kilpatrick led the defense with 15 digs. Amanda Gooch had a hand in three of Sam Houston's five blocks.
The Kats never trailed in the Coppin State victory, winning 25-16 25-15 25-18.
Sam Houston ran into a buzz saw in undefeated Cal-Poly earlier Saturday. Led by Adlee Van Winden with 14 kills, the Mustangs upped their record to 5-0 with a 25-20 25-12 25-12 straight set victory over the Bearkats.
Genung led the Kats with seven kills. Sophomore Jordyn Vaughn and Cunningham each added four kills.
Cal-Poly led from start to finish in both the first and second sets. The Bearkats held an early lead in the third before the Mustangs took control.
Outside hitter sophomore Sarah Sherman had a hand in three of the Sam Houston defense's six blocks. Kilpatrick totaled 19 digs.
Sam Houston continues its slate of four intercollegiate tournaments to start the season by participating in the Rice Invitational in Houston next week.
