For the second straight week, Sam Houston track and field landed multiple representatives among the Southland Conference's Athlete of the Week accolades, with senior Ashley Jenkins and redshirt freshman Chris Jefferson raking in the honors.
The women's field athlete of the week award is the second in as many weeks for Jenkins, who re-set her program record in the weight throw, behind a distance of 69 feet, 9 inches, at the Aggie Team Invitational. The mark, which was also a meet record, moved the Dallas product to No. 2 nationally.
Jefferson, the men's track athlete of the week, captured two meet records with first-place finishes in the 60 meters (6.78) and 200 meters (21.48) on Friday. The Jersey Village product boasted the fastest mark for a Southland athlete in both events over the weekend, while ranking 43rd in the 60 meters nationally.
The duo are key parts to the Kats' strong start to the indoor season, highlighted by a first-place women's team finish and second-place men's result in College Station. Sam Houston set three program records and six meet records at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
With two meets remaining before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, Sam Houston ventures to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Cherry & Silver Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
