Huntsville – Angela Beadle scored 24 points, pulled down a season high 17 rebounds and tied the Sam Houston school women's record for block shots with eight in an 87-76 loss to Southland Conference leader Abilene Christian Thursday night.
Led by Suzzy Dimba with 22 points and Sydney Shelstad with 21, the Wildcats upped their season record to 15-2 and remain the only unbeaten women's basketball team in the league with a perfect 6-0 Southland mark.
Shernise Robertson led Sam Houston with 21 points. The Kats now are 7-10 for the year and 3-4 in the Southland. Kamry Orr also scored in double digits for the Bearkat women with 14 points.
Abilene Christian never trailed after an early Sam Houston 2-0 lead. Up by six at halftime, the Wildcats outscored the Bearkats 27-19 in the third quarter and never looked back. ACU led by as many as 20 points in the third period.
Beadle tied a school record set by Sam Houston Women's Athletic Hall of Honor member Sirena Autman set in 1990.
“Angela is a warrior under the boards,” Bearkat head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols said. “Abilene Christian came in here on a winning streak. They're an outstanding ball club.”
Amanda Barnes added eight points and Ashleigh Cooper and Laurynn McGowen each scored five for the Bearkats.
Robertson scored the game's first points to give Sam Houston its only lead as Abilene Christian roared to a 23-12 lead in the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter the Bearkats began to cut into the Wildcats' 13-point margin. Sam Houston cut the lead to seven points three times and went into the locker room down only six, 37-31, after a lay-up by Ashleigh Cooper with six seconds left in the period.
Sam Houston travels to Nacogdoches Saturday to face Stephen F. Austin in a 4 p.m. Southland matchup.
