Dropping only one set in any of its singles matches, the Sam Houston women's tennis team completed the opening weekend of its 2016 schedule with a 7-0 non-conference victory over Prairie View A&M Sunday afternoon.
The Bearkats won two of their three matches the past three days, defeating LSU-Alexandria 7-0 on Friday and falling 6-1 to Louisiana Tech Saturday.
“Picking up a couple of victories on the first weekend of the season certainly is a good way to start, “ Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “Every match I thought we got better. Right now, more than the technical aspect we're focusing on developing the mental belief that we can be competitive with anyone. The girls are aware that's where we need to go.”
Sam Houston started Sunday by winning the doubles point with Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic pairing for a 6-2 win at number one, Ema Barkovic and Maddie Mortimore taking a 6-1 set at number two and Fabienne Gettwart and Caitlyn Mitchell blanking the Panthers at number three 6-0.
Gettwart defeated Sydney Thomas 6-2, 6-1 in the number one singles. Casey won 6-3 7-6 over Neharika Rama at the two position. Barkovic rolled past Stacy Lackey 6-2 6-1 at three.
Milanovic defeated Trinity Randolph 6-1 6-0 at four. Mortimore finished the weekend unbeaten in all three dual matches with a 6-1 6-2 win against Shaddae Findley. Mitchell rallied after a second set loss to complete the sweep in a super-tiebreaker victory over Timara Maxwell.
Sam Houston heads to Dallas next weekend to take on the SMU Mustangs on Friday and Montana State on Saturday.
