KATS WINNERS IN TWO OF FIRST THREE SLC GAMES
The Sam Houston women will be out to earn their third Southland Conference victory in four league games Saturday when the Bearkats play host to New Orleans. The Sam women defeated Incarnate Word 65-60 in San Antonio to open SLC action last Saturday and topped Southeastern Louisiana 80-56 Thursday night. The Privateers are 1-1, falling to preseason Southland favorite Lamar in Beaumont 79-52 then defeating UIW 55-49 at home Thursday.
ALL-TIME SHSU VS UNO WOMEN'S SERIES RECORD
Sam Houston and New Orleans meet for the fifth time in women's basketball. The Bearkats lead the series with three victories to one for UNO. The Privateers won 74-64 in New Orleans in 2010. In Southland Conference play, Sam Houston won 78-47 on the road and 87-56 at home in 2014 and 75-59 in New Orleans in the pair's only meeting last season.
ONLY ONE TEAM WITHOUT A LOSS IN SOUTHLAND PLAY
Abilene Christian (2-0) is the only team in the league without at least one loss after just one week of Southland Conference women's basketball action. Sam Houston joins Central Arkansas, Northwestern State and Lamar with 2-1 records. McNeese State, New Orleans, Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana are 1-1.
LAST TIME OUT - SAM HOUSTON 80, SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA 56
Shernise Robertson scored a season best 29 points and tied a school record with seven three-point baskets to lead the Kats to an 80-56 win over the Lions Thursday night. Angela Beadle scored 17 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. Laurynn McGowen came off the bench to score 15 points.
SCOUTING REPORT ON NEW ORLEANS
The Privateers stand 4-7 for the year. Sophomore Randi Brown, a 5-7 guard, leads the team with 16.7 points per game. Bria Platenburg, a 5-10 junior forward, and Kayla Mundy, a 5-8 sophomore guard, add 7.9 and 6.5 points per contest, respectively.
SAM HOUSTON IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Bearkat women posted a 4-6 record in the non-conference portion of their 2015-16 schedule. The victory total included a pair of road victories with the Kats defeating LIU-Brooklyn 63-56 in New York and Texas Southern 53-51 in Houston. Sam Houston posted home victories over Our Lady of the Lake and LSU-Alexandria.
TWO KATS AMONG SOUTHLAND LEADERS
Guard Shernise Robertson and center Angela Beadle rank second and 18th, respectively, in Southland scoring with averages of 16.1 and 11.9 points per game. Beadle is the league's third-leading rebounder with 8.0 boards per contest. Robertson led the Southland in scoring as a junior last season. This year she also ranks fifth in free throw percentage and ninth in assists. The senior guard has scored in double figures in 10 games this year and 34 in her SHSU career.
BEARKAT LEADERS RANK AMONG TOP KATS ALL-TIME
Senior center Angela Beadle has become the 15th Sam Houston women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points. Her career mark stands at 1,029 points. The 2014 All-Southland Conference selection stands fourth in Bearkat women's career rebounding with a total of 793 boards and third in SHSU career blocked shots with 145.
After leading the Southland Conference in scoring as a junior transfer in 2015, Shernise Robertson has climbed to 26th in Sam Houston career scoring with 753 points. Her career average of 18.8 points per game is tied as the best in Bearkat women's annals. Sam Houston Athletic Hall of Honor member Sherry Pfister averaged 18.8 points from 1980 to 1983. Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols averaged 17.8 points in her two seasons as a Bearkat from 1988 to 1989.
NEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTING TO KAT SUCCESS
Newcomers to the 2016 Bearkat squad are playing important roles for the squad. Laurynn McGowen, a 5-8 freshman, is the team's third leading scorer with 8.8 points per game. Kamry Orr, a 5-8 freshman, adds 5.6 points per contest and has totaled 26 assists. Jasmine McCants also provides scoring off the bench.

“One of the things we've emphasized with the team is the importance of protecting your home court and winning games on our floor. If we can go unbeaten at home we're in the tournament in Katy. Sneak some wins on the road and you're looking at a bye. We came out hungry Thursday night at home and played with a lot of intensity. New Orleans has a strong, physical team that's going to present some challenges for us.”
