HAMMOND, La. – The Sam Houston State soccer team hits the road for a pair of matches this weekend, paying visits to Southeastern Louisiana (7 p.m.) on Friday and Nicholls (1 p.m.) on Sunday.
Entering the fifth weekend of Southland Conference action – with five regular-season matches to go – the Kats are tied for sixth in the league standings with the Lions. Sam Houston is seeking stability in what has been an up-and-down conference slate.
Sam Houston split overtime matches a weekend ago as an Allie Johnson game winner 40 seconds into the first extra time gave the Bearkats a 3-2 win against Lamar on Friday at Pritchett Field. On Sunday, the Kats fell by the same score, 3-2, in double overtime to Northwestern State.
The Kats rank third in league games in shots (14.80 per game) and goals (1.80). Individually, Johnson checks in at second in the conference in shots (3.60 per game), second in goals (1.00 per game), third in points (2.20 per game).
THE SERIES
vs Southeastern Louisiana
Friday's matchup marks the first meeting between the Bearkats and Lions since last year's Southland Conference Tournament championship match. After a scoreless regulation and two overtimes, the Kats eventual fell 3-1 in penalty kicks. Sam Houston is 5-7-3 all-time against Southeastern and is 3-3-1 in Hammond, La. The Kats defeated the Lions, 1-0, in their last trip to Hammond, with Allie Johnson provided the game-winner in the 45th minute.
vs Nicholls
Sam Houston owns a 9-5-1 all-time record against Nicholls but fell 2-0 to the Colonels a season ago at Pritchett Field. The loss was the first on home soil against Nicholls in seven matches. Sam Houston has won eight of the last 10 matches in the series and is looking to pull even at .500 in Thibodaux, La., entering the weekend with a 3-4 mark at the Colonels.
