THIBODAUX, La. – Sam Houston State soccer could not slow down Nicholls at the Colonels celebrated senior day on Sunday afternoon, dropping the weekend finale, 3-0, from the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
The Bearkats, who find themselves fighting for a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament with three matches remaining, fell to 2-13-1 overall and 2-5-1 in league play. Sam Houston returns home for two straight matches beginning with Incarnate Word on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Colonels' Kristy Helmers posted a brace, getting Nicholls (6-6-1, 3-4-1 SLC) on the board in the 11th minute on a shot through the right side. Jess Coates provided the assist. Nine minutes later, Coates, who had an assist on all three goals, found Hannah Savoie, who chipped in it from the left side.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Kats were unable rebound, falling further behind just four minutes into the frame as Helmers notched her second goal on a ball through the right side of the net. On the match, Sam Houston was held to just three shots on goal, its lowest since Aug. 28 against College of Charleston.
Nicholls kept the Kats on their toes, tallying 16 shots including seven on goal. For Sam Houston, Taylor Pritchard, Bailey Strong and Hannah Dupin provided the only shots on net.
