FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State junior quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe has been named the Southland Conference's Offensive Player of the Week according to an announcement from league officials on Monday morning.
It is the fourth time this season a Bearkat has claimed the league's weekly honor and the second time for Briscoe individually.
The honor comes on the heels of a record-setting performance on Saturday night in the Bearkats' 59-23 win over Central Arkansas that clinched the Southland Conference title. The Kats' signal caller completed 27 of his 42 pass attempts for 431 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions against the Bears, who entered the week with the Southland's top-rated defensive unit.
That showing gave him 52 touchdown passes this season, setting a new Southland Conference record in that category. The previous record of 48 had stood since 1989 when Stephen F. Austin's Todd Hammel set the league's high-water mark.
It was the fifth time this season Briscoe has thrown for at least 400 yards and also the fifth time he has thrown for at least five scores in a single contest. Entering 2016 Sam the most touchdowns any Bearkat had ever thrown in a game was five; however, Saturday also marked the fourth time this season Briscoe has thrown least six with the seven scores matching his own school record that he set earlier in the season against SFA.
The Houston native is now one of just five players in FCS history to throw for at least 50 scores in a season eyeing the FCS' all-time record of 56, held by Willie Totten (Mississippi Valley State, 1984) and Bruce Eugene (Grambling, 2005), Along with Totten and Eugene, only Vernon Adams' (Eastern Washington, 2013) 55 and Jimmy Garoppolo's (Eastern Illinois, 2013) 53 touchdowns in their respective seasons stand as a higher total than Briscoe's 2016 season to date.
Briscoe and the Bearkats were named the No. 5 overall seed in the FCS Playoffs on Sunday morning and following a first-round bye will open up their playoff run on Dec. 3 at Bowers Stadium.
