BATON ROUGE, La. – For the second time in its non-conference slate, Sam Houston takes on an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. The Bearkats visit LSU on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the game being streamed on the SEC Network Plus, available through ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
In its last outing, Sam Houston (0-8) produced a season-high in points, free throw percentage (86.7) and field goals made (23) during a 75-65 loss. The Kats trimmed a 13-point deficit into a one possession game with three-and-a-half minutes remaining at Prairie View A&M but could come no closer.
Sam Houston freshman Rachel Harrell sunk a season-high four three pointers, re-setting her career high while leading the Bearkats (0-8) with 14 points in the loss. Lydia Baxter, Jasmine McCants and Kiera McKinney each accounted for eight points while Jada Ballew recorded a season-best four assists.
Wednesday's matchup against the Tigers (7-2) will be the fourth all-time and first since Nov. 15, 2014. LSU leads the series 3-0 with each matchup coming since 2000.
In its last meeting, Sam Houston kept the game tight early, maintaining an 18-15 lead early in the first half and only trailed 32-25 at the intermission. From that point forward, LSU outscored the Bearkats 39-20 in route to a 71-45 victory.
This season, LSU is off to its best start since the 2009-10 season, and has won three straight. On Sunday, the Tigers bested in-state rival Tulane, 69-51 as sixth-year head coach Nikki Fargas recorded her 100th victory at the helm of the program.
For the Kats, the game will be its first in 11 days after spending last week away from competition due to finals. Sam Houston will play just three games in the month of December with the third and final game coming Saturday at Texas State (7 p.m.).
Among Southland Conference competitors, Sam Houston ranks second in rebounding offense (43.5) and fourth in rebounding margin (+4.0). The Kats are also first in defensive rebounding percentage (.700).
McCants and Baxter are tied for 13th in rebounding (5.9 per game). Harrell is 13th in three-pointers per game (1.7) while Jenniffer Oramas is 16th with 1.6. Kiera McKinney is tied for fifth in blocked shots per game (1.3) while Morghen Day is seventh in minutes played per game (31.6).
