HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston State Bearkats used a strong second half to run past LSU-Shreveport, 91-59, on Saturday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Cameron Delaney hit 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and finished with a game-best 19 points off the bench and Sam Houston (5-3) outscored the Pilots (6-3) 57-26 in the second half after leading by just one at the break to run away with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Kats hit just one of 10 tries from beyond the arc in the first half, but used a 12-2 run late in the period to take a 34-33 lead into the locker room. Ten Sam Houston players found the scoring column in the first half, with Butler and Cameron Delaney leading the way with five points apiece.
Sam never led by more than three in the period as the Pilots used four threes, including one from Rashard Owens to tie things up at 18-18 with nine minutes to go. That started a 10-2 run by LSU-S that gave it a 28-20 lead.
But Dakarai Henderson put an end to that with a floater and scored five of the next seven Bearkat points while Delaney put the Kats ahead 32-30 with the first three of the night with just over a minute left until the break.
The Kats opened up the second half by hitting its first three shots, two from John Dewey III and a three ball from Aurimas Majauskas and quickly worked its lead up to double digits within the period's first six minutes.
Delaney added two more threes as the Kats continued to pile on, upping the lead to 57-42 just before the 8-minute mark. From there Sam Houston just added on as Delaney went on to hit four of his five three-point tries in the half, holding the Pilots to just 29.6 percent shooting in the final period.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Delaney finished with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including five threes, while Dakarai Henderson added a dozen points of his own. In all, 11 Bearkats cracked the scoring column, including John Dewey III and Jamal Williams with eight apiece.
KEY STAT
The Bearkats hit 46.7 percent from the floor in the opening half, but amped things up in the second half, hitting 51.6 percent. The Kats led by just one at the half, but used that revved-up offense to run by the Pilots, 57-26, in the second half, holding LSU-S to just 29.6 percent shooting.

Sam Houston will now take most of the week off to prep for final exams before heading to Carbondale, Ill., for a Dec. 10 meeting at Southern Illinois.
