Thomas Rashawn scored 18 points with six coming in the final 2:53 to lead A&M-Corpus Christi to a 75-70 come-from-behind Southland Conference men's basketball victory over Sam Houston Saturday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville.
Dakarai Henderson led the Bearkats with 19 points including four three-pointers.
In a battle between the second and third place teams in the 2016 Southland men's race, the Islanders solidified their hold on the number two spot in the conference tournament in Katy in two weeks with the win. A&M-Corpus Christi stands 13-3 in league action and 22-6 for the year. Sam Houston dropped to 15-13 for the year and 10-5 in Southland.
A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to an eight point lead in the first seven minutes but Sam Houston fought back to go up by 11 points, 66-55, with 6:12 to play on a jumper by Jamal Williams.
Albert Almanza gave the Kats a 70-64 lead with a three-pointer with 3:17 to play. The Bearkats did not score again as a tip-in by Bryce Douvier tied the contest 70-70 with 55 seconds remaining and a dunk by Thomas with 48 seconds left was the go-ahead basket for the Islanders.
Torry Butler scored 11 points and Jamal Williams added 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for the Kats. Hameed Ali scored 14 points for the Islanders.
Sam Houston outscored the Islanders 30-18 in the paint and got 24 points off the bench.
The Bearkats travel to Conway to face Central Arkansas Monday then wrap up the regular season against Southland leader Stephen F. Austin at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum next Saturday.
