Led by second baseman Dani Allen who went 5-for-5 for the day with two RBIs, the Sam Houston softball team totaled 21 hits as the Bearkats defeated Creighton 7-3 and North Texas 5-4 at the Mean Green Softball Classic at Lovelace Stadium in Denton.
Katie Doerre posted a home run in each contest and totaled four RBIs on the day as the Kats posted a season best 10 runs in the first game against Creighton and topped that mark with 11 hits in the victory over the host team North Texas.
In Sunday's opener, Allen went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. The Bearkats posted their seven runs on 10 hits and two CU errors as designated player Breanna Homer and Doerre had multiple hit outings as well, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2 respectively.
Doerre opened Sam Houston's scoring with a three-run homer to centerfield that scored Homer and Allen in the first inning. Homer led off the contest with a single up the middle and Allen reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Jennie Kieval kept things rolling by leading off the second inning with a double to right center. After Homer and Allen followed with a walk and a single and all three ended up scoring to put the Kats to 6-2. Sam Houston added its seventh run on another single by Allen that scored Samantha Belongia who led off the sixth inning with a single.
Lindsey McLeod started and picked up the victory, spreading seven hits over five innings and striking out four of the 25 batters she faced. Jordan Franks struck out two in relief working the final two frames.
In the nightcap, Sam Houston rallied from 3-0 down to take the victory. Doerre got the scoring started in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. Hannah Marino pinch hit single scored Emily Bounds to cut the Eagle margin to 3-2.
Tiffany Castillo's double scored Allen to tie the game and Bounds blasted a single for the go-ahead run to put the Kats up 4-3 after five innings. Castillo added what proved to be the winning run with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Brooke Seneshen started in the circle in the nightcap, striking out six batters in two-and-two-thirds innings. Taylor Atkinson earned the victory in relief as she limited North Texas to only three hits in the final four-and-a-third innings.
Next up for the Bearkats will be the South Florida Tournament next Friday through Sunday.
