Nicholls sweeps doubleheader Sunday

Nicholls swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from Sam Houston Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bearkats 5-3 in seven innings in the first game and 9-1 in five innings in the nightcap.

The losses drop the Bearkats to 6-17 for the year and 1-5 in Southland Conference play. The Colonels now own a 16-11 season record and are 3-2 in the league.

Third baseman Breanna Homer gave Sam Houston a 3-1 lead with a three-run double in the top of the third inning of the opening game. But Nicholls bounced back for three runs in the bottom of the third and an insurance tally in the sixth inning.

Starting pitcher Lindsey McLeod gave up six hits in two-and-two-thirds innings in the circle. Jade Alford and Taylor Atkinson pitched in relief.

Colonel pitcher Hannah Haydel allowed the Kats only four hits in the nightcap. Second baseman Dani Allen brought in the team's only run with a single in the third inning. Catcher Katie Doerre went two-for-three with a double.

Atkinson (3-8) took the loss in the circle, giving up six hits and four runs to the 13 batters she faced. Jordan Franks and McLeod each pitched in relief. Nicholls totaled their nine runs on 14 hits.

Sam Houston's next action is a non-conference contest with the University of Houston Tuesday night on the road. The Bearkats return home to host Northwestern State in a three game series Friday and Saturday.
