
School records fall at Victor Lopez Classic

Sam Houston State's Olivia Olguin broke a 28-year old school record and was one of four track and field athletes to set program bests at the 34th annual Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice on Friday and Saturday.
Olguin ran a 17:30.13 in the 5,000 meters in a seventh-place finisher, bettering Karen Schardein's mark that had stood since 1988. Meanwhile, Camry Grisby (2:09.74) and Briana McCall (2:09.76) earned program bests in the 800-meter run with first and second place finishes respectively. The Kats also took third in the event as Jamie Eckford finished at 2:13.08.
In the same event, on the men's side, at 1:49.26, Jeffrey Moore set a new school record with a first-place finisher on Saturday.
Danielle Demas bested competitors from Tulane, Stephen F. Austin, Houston and A&M-Corpus Christi among others, running 13.29 in the 100-meter hurdles to take first. In the 400-meter hurdles, Ruth Amaku secured fifth at 58.26.
The Bearkats posted strong performances in the men's and women's hammer throw as Ashley Jenkins leading the charge with a first-place throw of 62.12 meters. On the men's side, Kalvin Singletary was as impressive, notching a mark of 60.21 meters for second. Singletary also finished first in the discus throw at 52.87 meters, followed closely by James Endsley (50.56) in third and Aaron Akens (50.04) in fifth. In the shot put, Jenkins secured third (14.64 meters) and Kristine Hanks took fourth (14.54 meters).
Other Day 1 results included a third-place finish for Ana Moreno in the 3,000-meter steeplechase behind a personal-best time of 10:59.90 and Evan Arambula's seventh-place result in the event, finishing at 9:34.73.
Sam Houston's 4x400-meter quartet of McCall, Grigby, Amaku and Jordan Grady took second overall and finished first among collegiate competitors at 3:42.98. In the women's pole vault, Margaret LaSalle took fourth (3.67 meters) and Tristyn Allen took third (5.85 meters) in the long jump.
The Bearkats finished 5-6 in the triple jump with Darian Bucknor (12.15 meters) and Allen (12.06 meters) earning the marks respectively. Elizabeth Lyssy brought home the silver with a mark of 45.05 meters in the javelin throw. For the men in the event, Anthony Garcia brought home first place (66.02 meters).
Justin Jenkins took fifth for the men in the 200 meters, doing so at 21.44 while Eric Pouncey secured the same finish in the 400-meter dash (47.64). The men's 4x100-meter relay tandem of Dedrick Brooks, Justin Justin Jenkins, Kevin Beasley and Eric Pouncey finished fourth (40.58).
The squad's 4x100-meter relay squad – Beasley, Robert Monticone, Moore and Pouncey – also had a big day, taking third at 3:13.85. Garrett Larson took home a second-place finish in the pole vault at 5.07 meters, followed by Ashton Summers in third (5.07).
