Fabienne Gettwart won in three sets at number one singles and Maddie Morrtimore finished her senior year with a straight set win at number six in the Bearkat women's tennis team's final dual match of the 2016 season Sunday in Natchitoches, La.
Northwestern State defeated the Bearkats 5-2 to up the Demons' season mark to 11-9. Sam Houston completes the year 7-13.
Mortimore's victory was her 63rd singles win as a Bearkat. She finishes her four-year career ranked third in all-time SHSU women's singles victories. For the year, she posted a 26-7 record combining both 2015-16 tournament and dual match play. The 26 victories tie as the third highest total for a Bearkat in one season.
“It will be tough for everyone associated with the Sam Houston women's tennis program to say good bye to Maddie Mortimore,” head coach Jim Giachino said. “To post 63 career singles wins is amazing especially considering most of her sophomore year she was sidelined by an injury. Her perfect 4.0 grade point average demonstrates her success in the class room. Maddie defines the term student-athlete.”
Gettwart posted her 11th victory of the dual match season playing number one. Gettwart defeated Natalya Krutova 6-2 2-6 7-5. Mortimore posted a 6-1 6-2 victory over Alzbeta Veverkova.
