John Dewey, a 6-0 point guard from Blinn College who ranked fourth in assists nationally in junior college basketball this season, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Sam Houston and play for men's coach Jason Hooten.
Dewey started all 22 games as Blinn rolled to a 22-10 record this year. The freshman from the Bronx, New York, averaged 13.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and 80.1 percent from the line. His also averaged 7.5 assists for head coach Scott Schumacher.
“John Dewey is a guy that we coveted and we're extremely happy to have him become part of our family,” Hooten said. “With three years left to play, John has a chance to be a top assist leader in the country. He has tremendous speed, vision and can really guard the ball. He has had a great up-bringing and pedigree with his youth coaches and this year with Coach Schumacher at Blinn.”
Dewey played for coach Dwayne Mitchell at Monsignor Scanlan and Holderness School. He was a two-time “Most Valuable Player” after leading his team to a pair of state championships.
“John is the whole package as a model student-athlete,” Schumacher said. “He is an outstanding player, a leader and an excellent student. Teachers rave about him. The kids follow him. He is a hard worker who is quick and fast with good vision. He had a great recruiting visit to Sam Houston and was impressed with everything – the campus, the academics with the banking department, the facilities, his future teammates and the coaching staff.”
Sam Houston has finished among the top three teams in the Southland Conference and reached the semifinals of the league tournament each of the past three years. The Bearkats have earned three consecutive post-season berths in the CollegeInsider.com tournament.
