No. 16 ranked Texas A&M rolled to an 18-4 victory over Sam Houston Wednesday evening in College Station after the two universities switched venues due to two days of hard rain.
The Aggies sent a bus to pick up the Bearkats so the pair could play a single game at the Aggie Softball Complex. Originally the two squads were scheduled for a doubleheader in a make-up of a previous rain out in Huntsville in March.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the first inning, a single by Sam Houston first baseman Codi Carpenter knotted the contest at 1-1. Her hit scored catcher Katie Doerre who walked then advanced on a single by shortstop Tiffany Castillo.
The Aggies took a 3-1 lead with two tallies in the bottom of the second. Second baseman Kaitlyn Alderink started a nine-run third inning for Texas A&M with a two-run homer off the score board. Four of the nine runs were unearned as the Bearkats committed two errors to extend the inning.
Two more home runs and a double in a six-run fourth lifted the Aggies' totals to 18 runs on 13 hits for the contest.
Carpenter added a double to lead off the fifth inning. She moved to third on a single by left fielder Ashley Kopps and scored on a single to left field by Bailey Watson. Third baseman Breanna Homer singled to bring in Kopps to give the Kats three runs for the frame.
Sam Houston totaled six hits. Jordan Franks started in the circle for the Bearkats. Taylor Atkinson, Jade Alford and Lindsey McLeod all saw action in relief.
Sam Houston now heads to West Texas for a three-game Southland Conference series with Abilene Christian Friday and Saturday.
