HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State soccer has announced the signing of Carlota Suarez Crespo, a Madrid native who competed at Colegio Caude, the program announced on Tuesday.
The multi-sport athlete, who competed in track, freestyle swimming, cross country and snowboard, joins a Bearkats program that is coming off a 10-win season and appearance in the Southland Conference Championship match.
“We are very excited to sign Carlota,” ninth-year head coach Tom Brown said. “She is an exceptional athlete and she has been very successful at quite a few sports. She is a very good goal scorer. She can play as a forward or as a winger depending on what system we are playing.”
Suarez joins Sam Houston with a range of success at Club de Fútbol Pozuelo de Alarcón, a club competing in Pozuelo de Alarcón in the Community of Madrid. There, she was named second national division three consecutive seasons between 2013 and 2015.
During the 2011-12 season with C.F. Pozuelo, under 16, she notched 47 goals including 60 in friendly matches. Crespo also supported the senior team in the regional league.
“Carlota is another top quality player in what is a very good recruiting class,” said Brown.
Sam Houston State soccer will play 19 total games including six at Pritchett Field as well as a season-opening visit to Alabama in 2016.
The Bearkats host UTSA on Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the first regular-season action at Pritchett before playing three straight at the University of Texas. The Kats take on Detroit Mercy on Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. and College of Charleston on Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. before taking on the Longhorns on Sept. 2 (7 p.m.).
Southland Conference action begins on Sept. 16 at Central Arkansas with the Kats playing the first three on the road. Sam Houston is seeking its first Southland title in the program's 13-year history.
