Quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe highlighted a successful night for the Bearkat offense in the annual Orange-White spring scrimmage Friday night at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
The junior signal-caller completed 14 of 22 passes for 167 yards, leading the offense to a 65-46 victory based on a special spring point system. Briscoe completed an eight-play, 65-yard scoring drive with a nine-yard TD run on his opening possession. His next time up, he directed a six-play 50-yard drive for a two-yard scoring run by Remus Bulmer.
Back-up quarterback freshman Caleb Griffin completed seven of 12 passes for 66 yards including a 21-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Jordan Ingram. Bulmer was the night's leading rusher with 12 carries for 57 yards including a pair of short touchdown runs.
The scrimmage concluded a successful four-week spring training camp.
“Overall it was a great spring. We improved overall and we made great strides with leadership,” Sam Houston head coach K. C. Keeler said. “We'll have to look at the scoring system next spring. The defensive guys are complaining that the system didn't reward some of the things they did. But it was a good spring game and a successful camp.”
The defense came up with two big turnovers for scores. Cortland Fort returned a fumbled pass reception 88 yards for a score. Sophomore Anton Clark ran an interception back 89 yards for a touchdown.
Briscoe, who completed his first nine passes including a long gain of 44 yards, was the highlight of the night.
“You could see Jeremiah is just getting better and better,” Keeler said. “He had a great spring. All-in-all it's been a really good spring. This is such a great day. We had lots of alums and former players here. We had the parents and families of our current group of players. And all of our signees from this February were here, so we had the past, present and future of the program with us.”
During halftime ceremonies, Sam Houston offensive lineman Bridge Blount was recognized as the winner of the Blinka Family Scholarship presented by former Bearkat All-American and NFL performer Stan Blinka. Ridgeway Frank, a six-year player for the Bearkats who was a senior on the 2015 FCS semi-finalist team, was named as the recipient of the Bob Riley Award.
Sam Houston begins the 2016 season with a home game on Saturday, Sept. 3, against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
