Split Friday at Corpus Christi

Third baseman Breanna Homer went 4-for-7 including her eighth home run of the season to pace Sam Houston as the Bearkats split a Southland Conference doubleheader with A&M-Corpus Christi Friday afternoon at Chapman Field.

Catcher Katie Doerre and designated player Ashley Goetz each added an RBI to Homer's pair to lead Sam Houston to a 7-1 win in the first game. Lindsey McLeod shut out the Islanders for eight and two-thirds innings but A&M-Corpus Christi blasted three consecutive hits to earn a 1-0 extra innings victory in the nightcap.

Sam Houston scored seven runs on six hits and two Islander errors in the first game. Doerre doubled to give Homer and Goetz singled up the middle to give the Kats two runs in the opening inning. Homer's two-run home run over the right field fence also scored Bailey Watson as the Sam women increased their lead to 4-1 in the third.

The Kats added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a hit by Watson and two A&M-Corpus Christi errors.

Taylor Atkinson picked up her sixth victory in the circle with a complete game performance. She spread eight hits over seven innings, giving up only one walk.

McLeod gave up only four hits in the first eight innings of the second game, but the Bearkats could not get a run across, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Homer picked up two hits while Doerre doubled and Watson, Codi Carpenter and Jennie Kieval each  singled.

With two out in the bottom of the second extra inning, Adriana Ferris singled up the middle and Jessica Mendez followed up with a single to right field. Liz Carter's double was the game winner.

The two teams meet in the rubber game of the series at 12 noon Saturday. Sam Houston now stands 13-22 for the year and 5-8 in Southland action. A&M-Corpus Christi is 12-22 for the season and 2-11 in Southland play.
