
19 Kats Headed To NCAA West Competition

Ten women and nine men from the Sam Houston track and field team leave Monday to compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's West preliminary competition.
The meet will be held Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 28 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
Forty-eight student-athletes will compete in each event in both the West and East preliminary rounds. The East meet is being hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.
Sam Houston men competing in the West preliminary competition are Garrett Larson (pole vault), Kalvin Singletary (hammer and discus), Anthony Garcia (javelin), Jeffrey Moore (800 meter dash), Justin Jenkins (100 meter dash), Tyler Adams (high jump), William Stark (110 meter hurdles), Saige Revell (triple jump) and Aaron Akens (discus).
Bearkat women heading to Kansas are Ashley Jenkins (hammer), Danielle Demas (100 meter hurdles), Kristine Hanks (shot put), Ruth Amaku (400 meter hurdles), Tristyn Allen (triple jump), Camry Grigsby (800 meter run), Paula Smith (long jump and 200 meter dash), Elizabeth Lyssy (javelin), Ashley Thompson (pole vault) and Courtney Lord (high jump).
Since the NCAA East and West preliminary competition replaced regional competitions in 2010, 18 Bearkat women, 29 Sam Houston men and five Kat relay teams have competed in the West meet.
Demas placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles to advance to the championship meet last year where she placed 10th to earn All-America honors. Chris Cralle won the West preliminary hammer throw in 2011. Matt Viverette placed seventh last year in the men's 110 meter hurdles to advance to the national meet.
