SHSU Trio Bound for NCAA Finals

Danielle Demas became the third Bearkat to earn a spot in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas.
The winner of the Southland Conference 100 meter hurdles championship earlier this month, Demas took fifth place Saturday in the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Competition hosted by the University of Kansas. Her time of 13.11 seconds was only three-one hundreds of a second off her best mark of the season (13.08).
Demas joins Ashley Jenkins and Elizabeth Lyssy as the trio will represent Sam Houston at the national championship meet in Eugene, Oregon, June 8-11.
Jenkins and Lyssy earned spots in the finals with top 12 performances in the women's hammer throw and javelin, respectively, Friday.
Demas will be making her second trip to the NCAA Division I Women's national championships. She placed 10th in the finals last year with a time of 13.05. The senior placed fourth in last year's West preliminary competition.
Jenkins posted a mark of 213 feet five inches to place fourth in the women's hammer throw Friday. She also is returning to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. Last year she was ninth in the hammer with a throw of 202 feet four inches in the national meet. Both Demas and Jenkins earned All-America honors for their performances in 2015.
Lyssy hurled the javelin 161 feet, eight inches Friday to place 12th and punch her ticket for Euguene. The throw was more than eight feet farther than her NCAA West preliminary competition qualifying mark of 152 feet, 11 inches. She will be making her first trip to the NCAA finals.
Ten women and nine men represented Sam Houston in the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Competition hosted by the University of Kansas. Each event featured 48 competitors with only the top 12 finishers advancing from the preliminary competition to the championship meet.
