
Women lead, men 5th early on at SLC Outdoors

CORPUS CHRISTI – After the first day of action at the 2016 Southland Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium, the Sam Houston State women lead through five events while the men are fifth through three.
In the first event of the day, Kalvin Singletary tossed a winning distance of 192 feet, 7 inches in the men's hammer throw. For the junior, it was the first top finish at a league championship event. Teammate Aaron Akens took sixth with a toss of 171 feet.
Through five events in the decathlon, Tyler Adams leads the competition with 4,036 points scored. The reigning indoor heptathlon champion set a new conference meet record with a first-place finish in the high jump (7 feet, ¼ inches) while taking first in the long jump (23 feet, 6 ¼ inches), second in the 400-meter dash (48.98), third in the 100-meter dash (11.13) and seventh in the shot put (36 feet, 6 ¾ inches).
Adams is joined by teammates Jonathan Andrews (3,466) in seventh and Dylan Elliott in eighth (3,465). Elliott took seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.24), followed by Kagan Angers – who is in 16th at 2,849 points – in ninth (11.32). Andrews finished second behind Adams in the high jump (6 feet, 6 ¼ inches) while Elliott was tied for sixth (6 feet, 1 ½ inches).
Elliott took sixth in the long jump (22 feet, 2 ¼ inches) while Andrews went sixth in the shot put (36 feet, 10 ½ inches). Angers added a fourth-place finish in the long jump (22 feet, 7 ¼ inches) and seventh-place mark in the 400-meter dash (51.47).
The Sam Houston men totaled 13 points on the opening day while Stephen F. Austin leads all competitors with 30. Sandwiched in between includes Northwestern State (26), Southeastern Louisiana (16) and Lamar (14).
On the women's side, Sam Houston leads all teams after scoring a total of 55 team points during the opening day. McNeese is in second place with 27 points, followed closely by Northwestern State with 24.
Ashley Jenkins moved into the top-10 in the nation, capturing the women's hammer throw for the second-consecutive year with a toss of 215 feet, 3 inches, to beat her own meet record from last year. The top finisher was the second at the league championships this year for the junior, who also won the weight throw at indoors.
In the 1,000-meter run, Olivia Olguin took third (36:43.12) with a lifetime PR and school record followed closely by teammate Ana Moreno in sixth (37:34.06). Margaret LaSalle joined Thompson in the top five of the pole vault, finishing fifth at 12 feet, 1 ½ inches and Monica McClellan took eighth (11 feet, 1 ¾ inches).
Ashley Thompson finished second in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet, 1 ½ inches. The senior cleared the previous stadium record and improved on her indoor championships third-place mark of 12 feet, 9 ½ inches.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth Lyssy came in second in the javelin throw with a launch of 149 feet, 4 inches. The place was her best in the Southland championships, following up a third-place result at the outdoor event a season ago.
Through four events in the women's heptathlon, Sam Houston's Avery Zamzow holds a lead having tallied 3,159 points. The sophomore took second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.45), third in the 200-meter dash (25.56), fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches) and fourth in the shot put (36 feet, 11 inches).
Teammates Courtney Lord (3,018), Nicole Jenrette (2,904) and Frances Porter (2,826) are in fourth, sixth and eighth place respectively. Top-five finishes included Porter's 14.71 for third and Lord's 14.93 for fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Lord also won the high jump at 5 feet, 8 ½ inches while Jenrette went runner-up in the shot put (37 feet, ½ inch).
Paula Smith secured second and a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 8 ¼ inches while Tristyn Allen secured fifth at 19 feet, 3 ¼ inches, Lord took eighth (18 feet, 9 ¾ inches) and Morgan Heinrich went ninth (18 feet, 3 ¾ inches). Madeline Walker took seventh in the hammer throw at 161 feet, 7 inches.
The 2016 Southland Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue Saturday with men's and women's combined events, the decathlon starts at 10 a.m. Preliminary running events start Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. and continue through 7:30 p.m., concluding with the men's and women's 3000-meter steeplechase finals. Field events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Sunday's field events will get underway at 10 a.m. with running event finals beginning at 12 p.m. Team championship trophies and the meet's top male and female high-point scorer will be presented at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday at the conclusion of the men's 4x400-meter relay. All individual award presentations will take place immediately following the completion of each event.
