Sam Houston State defensive end P.J. Hall has been named to the 27-member Athlon Sports 2016 FCS Preseason All-America Team following a memorable sophomore campaign, the publication announced Thursday.
The Seguin product enters his junior season as the program's all-time leader in tackles for loss (52) and is second in both quarterback sacks (23) and kick blocks (10). Hall was named STATS FCS All-America second team and was first-team All-Southland Conference after leading the Bearkats with 75 tackles last year.
As a redshirt freshman, Hall was Southland Freshman of the Year and finished third in voting for the Jerry Rice Award presented by Sports Network to FCS “Freshman of Year.” The Seguin High School product totaled 30 tackles for loss, one short of the SHSU season record and boasted the fourth highest total in FCS.
The publication also tabbed Sam Houston as No. 2 in its preseason top 25. The Bearkats went 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the Southland Conference a season ago, reaching the FCS Semifinals for the fourth time in the past five seasons and sixth time overall.
The Bearkats return 16 starters and 36 lettermen from last year's squad. Sam Houston opens the 2016 home schedule against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday Sept. 3. Both Bearkat Champion chairback seats and bleacher reserved season tickets for the upcoming season are on sale now by calling (936) 294-1729 or visiting GoBearkats.com.
