Southland Academic Honor Roll

With 208 of Sam Houston's more than 400 student-athletes earning recognition on the 2015-16 Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor plus record department grade point averages, the Bearkats can boast the completion of their most successful academic year ever.
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll is released at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 grade point average (GPA) during the semester in which their sport's championship competition occurred.
This week the university also released its athletics spring 2016 academic report. Sam Houston's student-athletes combined for a 3.11 overall department GPA during the spring semester. That mark stands as the third highest semester GPA in department history. The Bearkats set a record in the fall with a 3.22 overall mark.
Sam Houston student-athletes have produced department average GPAs of 3.0 or higher eight of the last nine semesters and averages above 2.87 for 20 consecutive semesters. Those are GPAs higher than the overall student average for the entire university.
This spring 35 Bearkat student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs. Seven teams tallied GPAs above 3.00. Women's golf (3.69), tennis (3.60) and bowling (3.50) led the department.
Track and field student-athletes Danielle Demas and Tyler Adams received the Southland's highest academic awards. Demas was named as Southland women's indoor track and field “Student-Athlete of the Year” while Adams earned the honor for men's outdoor track and field.
Twenty-nine Sam Houston student-athletes were selected to the Academic All-Southland Conference honor squads for their sports, an award which honors players for both academic excellence and outstanding performances on the field of player.

Sam Houston athletics' goal of “Building Champions” is a team effort. Academic services, strength & conditioning, and training/medical treatment are an important part of the team. Alumni, friends and fans join the team too by becoming a Bearkat Champion.
Building Champions results in more than winning games, it involves creating well-rounded student-athletes. To do this, academic resources such as the Enterprise Job Skill presentation are necessary to assist them accomplish their goals in the classroom and in life.
