Tough Slate Awaits Sam Volleyball

A challenging 29-match schedule that includes trips to four talent-laden tournaments faces the Sam Houston volleyball team during the upcoming 2016 season.
Southern California, North Carolina, Sacramento State, Oakland, Tulane and other top intersection teams plus traditional in-state foes like TCU, SMU, Rice, UT-Arlington and Texas State dot the schedule that Sam Houston head coach Brenda Gray has put together for this fall.
“A tough slate awaits us next season,” Gray said. Sam Houston's 2015 squad that reached the semifinals at the Southland Conference Tournament in Conway last November had no seniors. “With all our players from last year's squad returning, we're really excited about the coming season. Overall we were extremely pleased with our spring play and look forward to a productive off-season as we prepare for the 2016 schedule.”
Sam Houston will start the season playing in tournaments at UT-Arlington, Tulane, Rice and TCU. The Kats also will take on Texas State in San Marcos in a non-conference match.
The Bearkats will open Southland Conference play on Tuesday Sept. 20 with their first home match in the newly remodeled Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum as the Sam women play host to A&M-Corpus Christi.
Other home Southland matches include Nicholls (Sept. 29), McNeese State (Oct. 1), Northwestern State (Oct. 20), Central Arkansas (Oct. 22), Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 1), Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 3) and New Orleans (Nov. 5).
“Everyone connected with the program is excited to come back to a newly remodeled Johnson Coliseum this fall,” Gray said. “We hope the fans will come out to support what will be an exciting team to watch.”
This year's Southland Conference Tournament again will be hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway. Last year, Sam Houston upset No. 2 tournament host UCA in three sets to advance to the semifinals.
