Leading up to the 2016 Sam Houston State soccer season, we'll visit with the team's seven seniors. The unit seeks to add on to success from last season that included the program's first 10-win season and an appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game.
In the fourth edition, we catch up with Wake Forest, N.C., native Madison Cannon. The Heritage High School product played in 20 matches, making 19 starts in her first season with the program after transferring from UCF. Cannon posted goals against Prairie View A&M and McNeese while adding an assist as well against the Cowgirls. She finished tied for third on the team with 36 shots, 11 of which came during the Southland Conference Tournament. Cannon produced 18 shots on goal in 1,421 minutes.
What is your favorite thing about Sam Houston State?
I would say the people. Everyone (students, teachers, coaches, teammates) make you feel right at home and are always willing to help you if you need it.
What is your most fond memory of playing soccer for the Bearkats?
I would say conference tournament. Getting to spend the week on the road with the team was so much fun and we were playing some of the best soccer that we've played all season. Even though we came up just short in the finals, it was overall an awesome experience.
What are some of your hobbies outside of soccer?
People have time for hobbies outside of soccer? Just kidding, I would say watching or playing any sport.
Do you have any pregame superstitions?
I usually listen to the same music playlist leading up to the game, and write the same Bible verse on my wrist tape.
What are your personal goals entering the season?
To enter the season fit and sharp, so I can help contribute to the team's success.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Probably Greece; I've always been fascinated with their history and culture.
What is your favorite place to eat in Huntsville?
Hmm. I would have to say Farmhouse Café.
Who is your favorite soccer player?
Hands down Lionel Messi!
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Outgoing, competitive and sarcastic
What does a perfect day look like to you?
Just hanging out at the beach or lake with friends and family
If you could live in a book, TV show or movie, what would it be and why?
Hmm. I'm going to have to go with the Minions movie. Yes, I'm a child, but who wouldn't want to hang out with the minions?
If you weren't playing soccer, what sport would you be playing?
I would probably be running track.
Who are your all-time favorite artists/bands?
Hmm. That's a tough one. I like a lot of different kinds of music, but I guess I would go with A Day to Remember. You can never go wrong with oldies like ACDC and Goo Goo Dolls either!
What is your best advice to give to the younger players?
Enjoy every minute, because it goes by so much faster than you think.
If you had a bucket list, what is one thing that would be on it?
To see the Northern Lights
