HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State outside hitter Jordyn Vaughn has been named Second-Team All-Southland Conference Preseason, the league office announced Thursday.
The Huntsville product enters her junior season as one of the Bearkats' top offensive threats. Vaughn has produced 501 kills during her first two seasons and owns 36 career aces and 328 digs.
A season ago, Vaughn started all 25 matches and was named All-Southland Conference Tournament, leading Bearkats with 14 digs in straight set upset of second seed and tournament host Central Arkansas. In the tournament semifinals against Houston Baptist, she added 13 kills.
“She's our main outside hitter,” head coach Brenda Gray said. “Jordyn will be a junior and the fact that she was injured so much last year was a detriment to the team. We're excited to see what she can do. When she got healthy, she was a main force in both matches of the tournament. We're happy to have her here.”
Vaughn totaled 335 points as a sophomore and posted 15 double-digit kill performances including a career-best 25 at Lamar. The reliable outside also played in all 30 matches for the Kats as a freshman while registering 192 kills including 18 at Stephen F. Austin.
The Bearkats open fall practice on Tuesday and were picked fifth by both the coaches and sports information directors, including one first-place vote in each poll, despite returning all six starters in addition to five others from a season ago.
The squad plays a total of eight home matches beginning with the Sept. 20 opener against A&M-Corpus Christi. Tickets are on sale by calling the Sam Houston ticket office at (936) 294-1729 or by visiting GoBearkats.com. Season seats are just $30 while individual match tickets are $5.
