After winning its weekend finale last Saturday, the Sam Houston State volleyball program opens its second tournament on Friday, visiting the Tulane Green Classic for three matches.
The Bearkats (1-2) take on Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 4 p.m. before Saturday matchups against UT-Rio Grande Valley (10 a.m.) and host Tulane (7:00 p.m.). Sam Houston is in the midst of a 13-match road trip before opening home play Sept. 20.
Last weekend, Sam Houston bounced back to force five sets after dropping its opening two, only to fall to UT-Arlington and Sacramento State. The squad responded, sweeping Arkansas-Pine Bluff behind strong offensive play including a .433 attack percentage in the opening set.
For her efforts, outside hitter Jordyn Vaughn was named to the UTA Mavericks Classic All-Tournament Team after recording 45 kills (3.46 per set) in three matches. The Huntsville product notched 22 kills in the season opener and hit .333 with 13 kills against UAPB in addition to four services aces.
Defensively, libero Claire Kilpatrick helped Sam Houston hold its foes to a .187 attack percentage, tallying 46 digs in two matches including 24 against Sacramento State. The Arlington product boasted an impressive 1.000 reception percentage in 28 total attempts.
