Hall named Southland Defensive Player of Week

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State defensive end P.J. Hall has been named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week after playing a major role in the Bearkats win at Lamar on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Hall recorded nine total tackles including 4 ½ tackles for loss against the Cardinals. The junior bolstered a Bearkats defense that held the Cardinals to just three first-half points and limited Lamar running back Kade Harrington to 76 net rushing yards on 29 carries.
“We knew what they were going to do before hand,” Hall said. “We watched a lot of film and prepared really well. We knew they wanted to get the ball to No. 8, so we just wanted to contain him. That safety was really important. Any time we get them to turn it over or we get points as a defense it helps a lot.”
The Seguin product also applied the pressure in the end zone on quarterback Andrew Allen that resulted in an intentional grounding call for a safety. The play gave Sam Houston a 13-point advantage in an eventual 44-31 victory.
Hall's 4 ½ tackles for loss raised his career mark and program best to 57 ½. The junior continues to widen the gap with Andre Finley, who amassed 49 during 1986-89.
Saturday's win marked the 500th in program lore, improving Sam Houston's all-time mark to 500-460-36. The Bearkats return to action this Saturday with a 7 p.m. visit to Houston Baptist. The game will be televised on Fox College Sports.
