Sam Houston falls to Texas

Sam Houston State soccer could not shake off an early deficit, falling 7-0 to the University of Texas on Friday night in Austin.

The loss dropped the Kats' record to 0-5 on the season as the Longhorns improved to 3-1 for 2016.

Senior captain Allie Johnson provided the lone shot on goal and shot for Sam Houston. The Kats' defense faced 30 shots with sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Swain saving two and freshman Anna Kaiser stopping three.

Freshman Taylor Pritchard started at leftback for the first time all season and played the full 90. Senior centerback Megan Bennett, junior midfielder Beryl Smith and sophomore centerback Whitney Woodward were the only other Bearkats to play the whole game.

Olivia Brook opened the scoring for the Longhorns in the 16th minute when she intercepted a ball in the Kats' half and dribbled into the box before tapping the ball past Swain and finishing it into the empty net.

It took just a little over a minute for Texas to double that lead. Alexa Adams used her speed to get down the right wing before ripping a shot across the goal. Jasmine Hart headed home a third goal in the 25th minute for UT.

Kyra Falcone provided two goals in less than 41 seconds in the 39th and 40th minute to head into the half up 5-0. Morgan Murphy headed another goal in the 56th minute off a corner, and Chelsea Supris lifted a seventh goal for Texas in the 70th minute.

The Bearkats will look to Sunday against Rice to try to snap their five-game losing streak; this is the longest losing streak for Sam Houston since the end of the 2006 season. Last year the Kats faced the Owls at BBVA Compass, losing the contest 2-0.

Kickoff for Sunday's match is set for 7 p.m.
