COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Sam Houston State men's track and field team showed no signs of rust in the first indoor meet of the season, taking the top spot with 105.5 points on Friday at the Aggie Team Invitational.
The Bearkats bested 12 other programs including four Southland Conference competitors while recording four first-place finishers and 14 top-five marks in the season-opening victory.
Sam Houston's Chris Jefferson began his sophomore campaign in style, running 6.79 to claim the 60-meters title and 21.35 in the 200-meter dash for his second top spot. Jeffrey Moore also paced action in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.72.
Kalvin Singletary also impressed in the opener, notching a second-place weight throw finisher as the senior set a new PR with a mark of 63 feet, 1 ½ inches. His followed that feat with a third-place result in the shot put to the tune of 53 feet, 5 ½ inches.
On the field side, Tyler Adams, the Southland's runner-up in the high jump a season ago, continued his dominance in the event. His leap of 6 feet, 10 ¼ inches was good enough for first place and followed up his first-place, meet-record height a season ago.
Sam Houston went 2-3-4 in the pole vault as sophomore Ashton Summers and freshman Bailey Henderson each reached 16 feet, 1 ¼ inches, to finish second and third respectively. Jay Roberson kick started his senior campaign with a mark of 15 feet, 7 ¼ inches in fourth.
Ethan Woods was among five freshman who recorded marks in their first collegiate meet, doing so with a second-place finisher in the 400-meter finals (49.05) while joining Joshua Mack, William Stark and Kagan Angers with an eighth-place result in the 4x400-meter relay (3:21.32).
