HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State returns home for its second game this month and third since Nov. 21, welcoming Lamar in Southland Conference play on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Sam Houston is looking to rebound after a pair of road losses, coming at the hands of New Orleans and Northwestern State last week. Senior center Jasmine McCants averaged 16 points and 6 ½ rebounds while sinking 10 free throws in the two games.
The Bearkats, who have struggled in the turnover department will need a strong turnaround against a Lamar team that leads the country in turnovers forced (25.6) and steals per game (14.3).
The Cardinals saw their 10-game win streak, the second-longest in program history, snapped on Saturday at Abilene Christian. Lamar fell 77-59 for the program's first defeat in league play and overall since Nov. 20 at Kansas State.
Individually, Sam Houston's Kiera McKinney ranks 16th among freshman nationally with a 1.47 per game and tied for second among all players in the Southland. Lydia Baxter, who owns Sam Houston's lone double-double performance this season, is 15th in rebounding (5.8).
The Bearkats enter Wednesday riding a two-game win streak against the Cardinals, bouncing Lamar 78-76 in Beaumont and 78-75 in Huntsville a season ago. Current senior Morghen Day tallied 12 points in the first matchup while McCants added seven points in the finale.
Wednesday will be the first of a season-high four straight games at Johnson Coliseum. The Bearkats will battle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday (4 p.m.), Southeastern Louisiana one week from Saturday (4 p.m.) and Stephen F. Austin two weeks from Thursday (5:15 p.m.).
