RUSTON, La. – The Sam Houston State Bearkats dropped a pair of matches over the weekend, falling 7-0 at ULM on Saturday before dropping a 6-1 decision on Sunday at Louisiana Tech.
The defeats even the Bearkats' record to 2-2 after wins over Prairie View and Dallas Baptist to open up the season.
The Kats could not get anything going against the Warhawks on Saturday in Monroe, La., as ULM took all three matches in doubles play before sweeping their way through singles play for the 7-0 win to move to 2-1 on the season.
ULM wrapped up the doubles point with Luana Stanciu and Tiffany Mylonas taking down Ema Barkovic and Diane Friedrichs (6-1) in the No. 3 slot before Petra Horakova and Madalina Grigoriu defeated Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee (6-2) in No. 2 doubles.
Andrei Stafana secured the first singles point with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-0) over Gettwart in the lineup's top spot before wins at Nos. 6 and 4 singles secured the ULM victory.
The Kats made things much tougher on the Lady Techsters on Sunday afternoon, despite falling 6-1. Louisiana Tech took the doubles point, but not after the No. 2 duo of Wee and Gettwart evened doubles play at 1-1 with a win (6-3) over Sonia Chen and Alba Escalona Perny. But the top Lady Techster pair of Jazmin Britos and Marta Sramkova managed to secure the point by outlasting Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic (7-5).
Louisiana Tech picked up another point with Nadja Manjon's win (6-4, 6-3) win over Casey in No. 4 play before Ema Barkovicclosed out a straight-set win over Chen (6-2, 6-2) in No. 2 singles to bring the Kats back to within a point at 2-1.
But Louisiana Tech followed with wins at No. 6 and No. 1 singles to secure the match. Britos provided the clinching point for the Lady Techsters, but was pushed to the limit by Gettwart who pushed each set (7-6, 7-6) to a tiebreaker before falling 9-7 in the clincher.
Wee also took Sramkova to a tiebreak game in the second set before dropping her point at No. 3 singles (6-4, 7-6 (7-3)), while Perny had to go a full three sets to take down Milanovic (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) at No. 5 play.
The Kats will next travel to Dallas to take on SMU on Friday before traveling to Tulsa, Okla., a week later to take on Tulsa and Middle Tennessee.
