HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats return home for a pair of games this week, starting Tuesday when they host Schreiner at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Kats will look to move back over the .500 mark against the Mountaineers in the third-ever meeting between the schools and will turn around on Thursday and host St. Thomas before traveling to Baylor early next week. Each game this week can be watched on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
Matt Pedersen will have the full call on Tuesday against Schreiner before being joined by Sam Leavitt on Thursday against St. Thomas. Fans can also follow live stats via Statbroadcast and also get live updates by following @BearkatsMBB on Twitter.
Sam Houston dropped three out of four contests over the course of an extended road trip last week before taking part in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska. There they fell to eventual tournament champion Central Michigan and Charleston before closing out the event with a wire-to-wire win over Santa Clara.
Coach Jason Hooten's squad has been a menace defensively, allowing less than 60 points per game this year in holding each of their first six opponents under 75 points for the first time since the 1979-80 season.
Christopher Galbreath Jr. earned all-tournament honors in Alaska and leads the team both in scoring and rebounding, while John Dewey III is averaging 5.0 assists per game after 21 total assists in three games in Anchorage.
SERIES vs SCHREINER
Sam Houston will be facing the Mountaineers for the third time in school history and the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Kats have reached the century mark in both games vs Schreiner, including a 121-101 win in 1999. That win was the first win in a school-record streak of 46 consecutive non-conference wins that lasted until 2008 and the 121 points still stands as the sixth most points in a single game in school history. The combined 222 points in that game is the third highest combined score in the history of Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
SERIES vs ST. THOMAS
The Kats are 2-0 against St. Thomas in school history, last facing off with the Celts in the 2015-16 season when they picked up a 114-92 win. Sam Houston scored 66 points in the second half of that game, a mark that is the third most in Bearkat history in a second period.
