Kats post strong marks at three meets

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Sam Houston State track and field programs earned several major marks while taking part in three different indoor meets over the weekend including the Meyo Invitational, New Mexico Invitational and Akron Invitational.
It marked the third weekend of competition during the indoor season with just one more leading into the 2017 Southland Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, in Birmingham, Ala. Below, is a look into some of the top marks, as well as, complete results of the busy weekend.
MEN'S RESULTS
Three Bearkats made major waves doing so in the shot put as Kalvin Singletary posted the Southland's best mark of the season with a toss of 66 feet, 7 inches.
Freshman teammate Joshua Hernandez followed in the league's best in second at 58 feet, 8 ¾ inches and sophomore Aaron Akens moved into fourth (57 feet, 10 ¼ inches).
Chris Jefferson ran the second-fastest time in the Southland Conference this season, taking fifth in the 60-meter dash with an altitude-adjusted time of 6.76 from the New Mexico Classic.
Teammate Jeffrey Moore followed up a record-setting result last weekend with a 1:50.26, also ranking second in the league, in the 800 meters at the Meyo Invitational.
Senior Chris Speaks made major strides climbing up conference lists over the weekend. In the 3,000 meters, Speaks ran the fifth-fastest conference time (8:24.38) and checked in at second in the 5,000 meters at 14:34.68.
Three Bearkats cracked the Southland's top 10 this season in the 60-meter hurdles, led by William Stark with the fourth-best time at an altitude-adjusted 8.17. Damian O'Neal followed at 8.18 and Fabian McCall went 8.19 in the event from the New Mexico Classic.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of Lawrence Coleman, Kevin Beasley, Chris Jefferson and Stark secured their best mark in the event this season with an altitude-adjusted 3:20.53 in New Mexico.
In Akron, Jay Roberson highlighted action, reaching 15 feet, 11 inches for a second-place finish in the pole vault. The senior also secured the conference's third-best result in the heptathlon with 4,816 points.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
The Bearkats secured the top-three spots on the Southland performance list at the Meyo Invitational in the 800 meters, led by Camry Grigsby's 2:10.58. Senior teammate Briana McCall ran a 2:13.00 in the event followed by sophomore Jamie Eckford's 2:14.31.
Kristine Hanks captured her best indoor mark and the Southland's top result in the shot put behind a throw of 52 feet, 7 ½ inches in New Mexico. The result ranks 25th nationally and placed her ahead of competitors from Texas and Texas Tech among others.
Sophomore Tristyn Allen posted a strong weekend in New Mexico, capturing the conference's top mark in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 1 ¾ inches while taking the league's second-best mark in the long jump at 19 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Darian Bucknor followed at 39 feet, 2 ½ inches in the long jump.
Olivia Olguin checked in at second in the league with a time of 17:47.30 in the 5,000 meters. The senior also posted her best mark of the season in the 3,000 meters, with a time of 10:11.19 at the Meyo Invitational.
Baylee Lara pushed forward in her strong freshman campaign, running an altitude-adjusted 8.56 in the 60-meter hurdles at the New Mexico Classic – the best among a Bearkat athlete in the event this season.
Melicha Smith climbed to sixth on the Southland performance list in a pair of events. The sophomore ran an altitude-adjusted mark of 7.63 in the 60-meter dash and an altitude-adjusted 24.83 in the 200 meters from the New Mexico Classic.
In Akron, Courtney Lord took part in the pentathlon, raking in the Southland's fourth-best result this season with 3,491 points. The sophomore set a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles (9.05) and shot put (34 feet, 3 inches) in the ninth-place finisher.
