FRISCO – Sam Houston State takes part in the 2017 Indoor Track & Field Classic, the first major indoor collegiate meet held in North Texas in the last 30 years.
The event will be held on Thursday and Friday at the newly built Ford Center at the Star – the world headquarters and practice facility of the Dallas Cowboys.
Ford Center at The Star is a 12,000 seat indoor multi-use events center which is a part of The Star, a 91-acre campus and home to the world headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys. Along with being the practice facility for the Dallas Cowboys, Ford Center also hosts Frisco ISD athletic events, community events and entertainment events.
The meet, presented by the Dunamis Sports Group, will feature 25 collegiate teams including schools from the Southland Conference, Conference USA, the Big 12, Sun Belt and more.
It will also be the final regular-season opportunity for Sam Houston to fine-tune leading into the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.
A weekend ago, Sam Houston earned several major marks while taking part in three different indoor meets over the weekend including the Meyo Invitational, New Mexico Invitational and Akron Invitational.
Three Bearkats made major waves doing so in the shot put as Kalvin Singletary posted the Southland's best mark of the season with a toss of 66 feet, 7 inches.
Freshman teammate Joshua Hernandez followed in the league's best in second at 58 feet, 8 ¾ inches and sophomore Aaron Akens moved into fourth (57 feet, 10 ¼ inches).
Chris Jefferson ran the second-fastest time in the Southland Conference this season, taking fifth in the 60-meter dash with an altitude-adjusted time of 6.76 from the New Mexico Classic.
The Bearkats secured the top-three spots on the Southland performance list at the Meyo Invitational in the 800 meters, led by Camry Grigsby's 2:10.58. Senior teammate Briana McCall ran a 2:13.00 in the event followed by sophomore Jamie Eckford's 2:14.31.
Kristine Hanks captured her best indoor mark and the Southland's top result in the shot put behind a throw of 52 feet, 7 ½ inches in New Mexico. The result ranks 25th nationally and placed her ahead of competitors from Texas and Texas Tech among others.
Sophomore Tristyn Allen posted a strong weekend in New Mexico, capturing the conference's top mark in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 1 ¾ inches while taking the league's second-best mark in the long jump at 19 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Darian Bucknor followed at 39 feet, 2 ½ inches in the long jump.
