Kats dominate singles play to take down UCA

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. – The Sam Houston State Bearkats dominated singles play and handed Central Arkansas its first conference loss of the season, 5-2, on Saturday at the UCA Tennis Courts.

The Bearkats (6-10, 3-3 SLC) dropped the doubles point, but rebounded to take five of six matches in singles play to take the match. Sam Houston did it in convincing fashion, with only two of its five wins extending to a third set.

"I was extremely proud of everyone on the team as they all brought it from start to finish," head coach Rob Hubbard said after the match. "While we left the closely-contested doubles point out there again, we rebounded nicely in taking five of six in singles play. This was a great conference victory for us to capture on the road."

Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey each had hands in a pair of wins on the day, teaming up to take down Pornpawee Pramethong and Hee-Jin Oh in doubles play before claiming each of their singles points.

The duo was the first to finish in doubles play, finishing with a 6-2 victory before the Bears (13-4, 2-1 SLC) rallied to claim each of the next two matches and the doubles point.

But Fabienne Gettwart had no trouble with Pramethong in the top singles match of the day, blowing by the Bears' top player by a 6-0, 6-4 margin to even the match at 1-1. UCA's Rada Manataweewat's straight-set win at No. 6 singles gave the Bears a 2-1 lead once again, but Milanovic quickly squared it back up as she outlasted Marli Van Heerden on the No. 5 line, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 to even things back up at 2-2.

Casey then put the Kats in front with a three-set win (6-1, 1-6, 6-3) win over Amiru Shimoguchi on the No. 4 court and Khee Yen Wee clinched the match one point later with a 6-3, 6-4 win over QiLi Ma at No. 3 play.

Ema Barkovic picked up the final point of the match for Sam Houston, taking down Oh in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Sam Houston will now get a shot at another league leader on April 1 when it heads to Beaumont to take on Lamar. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
